A Google World

Google Street View is a site where you can type in any address and see an actual picture of it. I'm sure you have all gone on it and found it fascinating to look at your own house on your computer screen. I always thought of it as a cool way to "see the world", and never thought of it as an invasion of privacy until I read this article about people in England who formed a human chain to block the Google mobile from taking pictures of their houses. Do you think that Google Street view goes too far in invading our privacy? Do you think that technology is becoming too invasive?

  1. I don't think it goes too far in invading our privacy, because it's not like the cameras can zoom in inside our houses and actually see what the inside looks like and what we're doing. THAT would be an invasion of privacy. But I mean, the outside of our houses and our landscaping are all, as far as I'm concerned, public domain that anyone can see. If I decide to drive around in my car and take pictures of the outside of people's houses, isn't that the same thing? It may be creepy, but I can already see it, so why not? The only way you can get around this is if you put some kind of shroud around your house shielding it from public view. But that would be weird. Anyway, I'm kind of rambling at this point... but I don't think this is an invasion of privacy. Just something really cool.

  3. I think it is pretty neat that we even have technology that can do this. Invasion of privacy? debatable. I was watching a morning tv show where they were talking about this...and the were talking about how the next step is rather that pictures, there will be a live feed and how easy it would be to catch your husband or wife in an affair from seeing what cars are going down your street. I thought that was pretty comical. For right now, I think its fine though.

  4. I think Google Maps and Google Street View is cool in theory; however, I do think there has to be a concern over safety and privacy. I had a friend look at his house on google maps to discover that he is actually in the photo. This, to me, seems really unsafe. In today's world you can never be too careful with your identity and in protecting yourself. There are people out there who will take advantage in any way they can, and to assume that you can live forever in your own bubble safely and content is a bit jaded. I'd rather be safe, than sorry. And I'd rather keep my address and pictures of my home off the internet!
